The third webinar reviewed the questionnaire sent out to the region’s jurisdictions and organizations regarding drivers. The major focus of the webinar was economic. The team discussed the likelihood of Hampton Roads not being ripe for major population growth and defined by an aging population and declining labor force participation rate. They also discussed the concept of a major economic “shock” such as Amazon HQ2 and how that would impact Hampton Roads. The working group was reminded of two important things: one, the goal is not to predict what happens in the future and two, the growth in the alternatives needs to be significant enough to “move the needle” and provide a stress test for the transportation alternatives.
